What Does “Healthy” Mean Anymore?
“Healthy” may be one of the most persuasive words on a food package. It is also one of the most complicated. To a shopper moving quickly through a supermarket, the word can sound almost self-explanatory. A product labeled healthy should, presumably, be good for you. But on an FDA-regulated food label, “healthy” is not merely an adjective. It is a voluntary nutrient content claim, which means a product must satisfy federal criteria before a manufacturer can use it in that way.
